Functional traits of plants tell us a lot about the functioning of different plant species and their role in ecosystems. Defining functional traits as ‘Response Traits’ and ‘Effect Traits’ may help us to predict effects of environmental changes on ecosystem functions via changes in species composition. Response traits are the traits that improve the fitness of a plant species, for instance rooting depth for accessing water in deeper soil layers. Effect traits are traits that inform us about the effect that different species have on their environment, for instance the quality of their dead leaves (litter) determines litter decomposition rates in the soil. I will explain how the relationships between variation in response traits and effect traits of the main species in an ecosystem can help us to predict the response of important ecosystem processes and functions to environmental changes. In the second part of my talk I will give examples of important effect traits and how to study and measure them to better understand the role of plant species composition for soil stability, fire and decomposition in different ecosystems.
